The color of the new school of Russian rap kicks off a series of progressive festivals.

The event has already passed

Vasily Vakulenko from Rostov-on-Don, aka, is a real multi-station operator, whom his colleagues on stage look up to. He performs under the pseudonyms Noggano and N1NT3ND0, participates in television filming, writes scripts, produces and runs his own label, Gazgolder. Basta began writing rap at the age of 15, and at the age of 18 he performed the track “My Game” at the Rostov Sports Palace. A busy time began for the young artist: the concert audience expanded day by day, and in 2006 Basta rose to the pinnacle of fame in just a few months.

In 2009, there was a significant commotion on the Russian-language rap scene associated with the appearance of an Oxford graduate living in London, nicknamed Oxxxymiron. Hiding under a pseudonym, a young rhymer and certified expert in medieval English literature, Miron Fedorov, won several serious battles and managed to quarrel with several top rappers in Russia at once, which only added significance and weight to his figure. Now Oxxxymiron has two albums “The Eternal Jew” and “Gorgorod” in its arsenal, millions of views on YouTube and guaranteed sell-outs in several countries at once.

Guf

Teen idol Guf (in the world - Alexey Dolmatov) first announced himself in 2000, but the real breakthrough in his career happened four years later, when he joined the Moscow group Centr. The triumvirate represented by Guf, Ptah and Slim set the trends in Russian rap for five years, until the team broke up with a scandal. Guf did not sit idly by: since the album “City of Roads” released in 2007, he has accumulated a lot of solo material. One of the founders of the label " TsAO Records"is known for the drug theme of his tracks and the “Guf is dead” meme, which was actively promoted by Internet jokers in 2011.

A native of the city of Yartsevo, Ivan Alekseev, now known as Noize MC, did not start with hip-hop at all, but with classes classical guitar at the music school. Noize MC's career started at school discos, continued with tours with a rock band in the Belgorod region, freestyle with a guitar in the Moscow dormitory of the Russian State University for the Humanities and successful battles, ultimately leading to a contract with Universal Music Group and national recognition. Noize MC does not lose his touch, writes scandalous tracks and passes as one of his own at rock parties, recording either with “Cockroaches!” or with “Lyapis Trubetskoy”.

When the album of the Rostov group “Casta” “Louder than water, higher than grass” was released in 2002, it became clear that strong contenders for the rap throne appeared on the horizon. Soon the entire hip-hop community was discussing the author of most of the material and the team's producer - the brutal Vladi (real name Vladislav Leshkevich). Poetic maturity, sincerity on the verge of confession, a serious masculine approach: simultaneously with the album “Caste,” his debut solo album “What should we do in Greece?” was also released. With a series of subsequent releases, Vladi proved that he was worthy of the loans issued.

Russian rap is very young, however, in the firmament of which many one-day stars and unknown performers managed to appear, a lot of money was invested in their promotion, which no one remembered after a few years. However, several really cool teams and performers have emerged whose songs become timeless classics, have tens of thousands of fans and are able to pack full houses for their concerts. Although I must admit, I didn’t really manage to scrape together ten really cool Russian rappers whose albums are sold year after year large editions. Meet the ten best Russian rappers.

10. Dzhigan

We got a star in tenth place recent years hip-hop scene Dzhigan, who loudly declared himself in 2009. His songs are constantly played on major radio stations, and he has received several awards, such as Golden Gramophone and Song of the Year. In general, real pop from the world of rap that people like.

9. Max Korzh

Belarusian boy Max Korzh became a real discovery of the Russian rap scene in 2012. The musician released two studio albums, which immediately became hits, and each concert invariably attracts full houses of people. Most of the artist's singles have a lyrical direction and revolve around relationships between people.

The eighth place of the best Russian rappers was taken by the Bad Balance team, not just a legend of Russian rap, but his father, mother, grandfather, grandmother and uncle all rolled into one. In general, they stood at the origins of the emergence of such a trend in music as hip-hop in the USSR, and then in Russia and the CIS countries. For many years they remained trendsetters on the rap scene, raising the bar higher every year. The most interesting thing is that Bad Balance, changing their lineups, still perform quite well these days, releasing new albums with enviable regularity.

The British boy Oxxxymiron with Russian roots, who graduated from Oxford, literally burst onto the Russian-language rap scene in 2009, becoming the best rapper of the year. It blends organically electronic music with aggressive dark lyrics with fast reading. The musician has released only one album and a bunch of individual tracks so far.

6. Bird

Ptah, aka Bore, was a member of several groups until he was ready for solo career. The rapper became famous as part of the Centr group, where together Guf and Slim, who, by the way, are also heroes of our rating, release several very successful albums. In recent years, he has been experimenting a lot, releasing albums and individual singles.

Noize MC is the king of freestyle in the Russian rap scene, who manages to combine several musical styles together, creating simply mind-blowing mixes. Due to provocative tests, musicians are often sued and performances are cancelled.

4. Caste

Casta is a real legend of Russian rap and the voice of the streets, however, gradually adding more and more lyrics to his texts. All tracks become timeless classics that do not lose relevance over time. Each album of the group, and they polish them to perfection over the years, is a real holiday for fans, and right away they fall into the top sales, forcing second-rate creations of pop artists to stand in the corner and blush.

3. Slim

Slim, a veteran of the Russian rap scene, began his musical excrement in the mid-90s, but became a real star as part of the group Centr. His signature style is texts with deep subtext. The rapper regularly releases at least one album a year, which surprisingly turns out to be of very high quality, without obvious failures.

2. Guf

The real national rapper of Russia is Guf, who is listened to by young and old, from informal get-togethers to glamorous audiences. He was one of the members of the Centr group, from which he left with a scandal, quarreling with all the participants, lived for some time in China and was seriously on drugs. His songs are dedicated to life, many of which are dedicated to drugs. His albums sell well, and every second song becomes a hit.

1. Basta

The best Russian rapper Vasily Vakulenko from Rostov-on-Don was behind several successful musical projects, the most successful of which was “Basta”. In just a few months, he was able to soar to the top of the Russian rap scene, setting the bar high for other performers. All of Basta’s songs are hits that can be listened to for months, and new albums set sales records.

The hip-hop business is growing so rapidly that you don’t always have time to remember the names rising stars. The West is exploding with new faces such as Lil B, Gucci Mane and Chance The Rapper. Russian stars of the new school, in turn, like to announce the next “revolution of the game,” but is this really so? The term soundcloud-rap has recently taken root in the foreign press. A new tag was needed to designate a wave of young American rap artists who have not yet hit the radar of old media and are generally not very well known to a wide audience, but are already leading the charts of more search-oriented new music SoundCloud. Russian hip-hop today is also actively developing. With the change in the meaning of hip-hop on the music market, with the acquisition of significant influence by hip-hop, the type of performers has also changed, some of whom will eventually become new classics. We have compiled our list of young but famous rappers of our generation.

A Belarusian rap group that captured the summer of 2015 with the track “Madness” and the incredibly successful album “Tragic City”. LSP fell in love with the listener not only with its atypical presentation for Russian hip-hop music, electronic beats and sound, but also with excellent storytelling skills about difficult life circumstances. LSP is a romantic intellectual who constantly vacillates between cynicism and vulnerability. Last summer, one of the group members, Roma the Englishman, died, after which Oleg LSP announced that he would continue to work with the group and dedicated the video for the song “Body” to Roma, which amazed all listeners with its sincerity and message.

Scryptonite’s full-fledged debut took place in 2015, after the release of the album “House with Normal Phenomena,” which was unanimously named by critics and music lovers as the best Russian-language album of 2015. The main feature of all tracks is not only the originality of the music, but also the predisposition to repeated listening, and each time new details are discovered in the music, complementing or completely changing big picture. After the “white rapper”’s tape fell into his hands, he decided to move in the same direction and become famous at any cost.

Wide popularity came to the rapper when he won the battle Versus serious opponent - Andy Cartwright. His style most of all gravitates towards trip-hop (a mixture of experimental hop, jazz, soul, rock), although the performer himself prefers not to push himself into the framework of one stylistic direction. ATL loves to use complex metaphors and allusions in his songs, the leitmotif of his works is anxiety, the end of utopia, the threat of war and complete surrender of peace on earth.

The young artist burst into the game in 2015, releasing the mini-album “Cursed Seal.” Ivan himself doesn’t think this work indicative, because the compositions from the release were not very serious, and if you describe the entire EP in a few words, then these are some “thoughts of a teenager.” However, the song “Gosha Rubchinsky”, which brought Ivan a lot of hype, was released on this release.

In 2016, the performer released an EP "VLONE" and EP "PlayBoy" , and already on these releases the compositions sounded modern and stylish, and the themes of the lyrics were wildly relevant, so these works can be called high-quality. In April, Face released the album “Hate Love” and went on a tour of 23 cities. Face is an extremely controversial figure, but he knows how to catch trends, thanks to this he gathers huge halls all over Russia.
