Creating and selecting a base

If you want to make drawing easier for yourself, buy from specialized stores ready-made basics for work on which you can immediately apply paint. They cost a decent amount of money, but they are just right for a beginner, as they greatly simplify the work.

Another great option is use of fiberboard. Every man's household contains scraps of this material, which remains after repairs. It is easy to find it by asking friends, relatives or a loved one. Surely someone has used it and has leftovers of this stuff in their garage.

The shape of the fiberboard sides is different, one looks very smooth, and the other is quite rough, vaguely similar to a woven structure. Both forms can be used, but it is worth applying to a rough surface. more parts and layers of primer, otherwise the color may become dull, since the paint will sink a little into the structure of such a product.

If you decide to try painting a landscape in oil for the first time, you can take a ready-made fiberboard base with a primer already applied. You need to take a small sheet, no larger than a landscape one.

If you want to make a DPV base with your own hands, an easy and inexpensive way is use of simple gelatin, you can add PVA glue to it to make the color white. This primer must be applied in several layers, allowing it to dry first. Three times will be enough. You should feel that the surface has changed. After preparing the base, you can proceed to creating the picture.

But you can use the mixing technique on a special piece of plastic or wood (in the case of oil better wood). Special brushes are also required:

They should have hard pile.
They also have different thicknesses.
Traditionally, large brushes are used in oil painting; they are convenient for creating backgrounds.

It consists of tone spots, with intermediate boundaries. Oil - unique material, it is appreciated for the fact that the colors are very naturalistic. Having learned to handle paints, you will be able to create diverse canvases with a rich color palette. Strokes can be made with different effects - not only monochromatic, but also consisting of several components.

This is very convenient when creating the main background. It consists of varied strokes. Considering the characteristics of the oil, you can be sure: the previous background will not show through, and first of all, it will be the fine work that will be visible. Large diameter brushes are most often used. But still, many beginners try to master small brushes. This is quite difficult, since the work will be painstaking. Master class on painting with detailed description:

1. In the beginning I always start by painting those landscape plans that form the environment or background. Therefore, we select the color of the sky and draw a strip of sea near the horizon.

2. We are not afraid of large strokes of paint. They create the image of sea waves and make the paint layer textured.

3. We continue to write what we started, gaining mass of sky and sea. The main thing at this stage is not to make a mistake in tone. If the sea is lighter or darker than normal (the same applies to the sky and any other fragments of the landscape), then the painting will “scatter”. The norm depends on the time of day, the weather and other factors and cannot be a constant value.

4. We begin to introduce clouds into the landscape. Every cloud has volume. That is, on one side it is light, and on the other it is dark. Most often, clouds are illuminated from above. From below they are in the shade. Thus, the clouds will be voluminous and expressive.

5. As they move away, the size of the clouds decreases. The further you go, the less noticeable they become. They seem to disappear into the haze of the background. Therefore, the clouds near the horizon will be slightly darker than those nearby. In addition, some clouds are combined into groups, forming peculiar “strips”. Some clouds are isolated from others. Thus, it is necessary to avoid “sameness” and convey a dynamic rhythm in the arrangement of clouds. If everything is done correctly, we will get a voluminous sky stretching into the horizon.

6. Now we proceed to the crest of the wave. Here you need to understand that the wave is similar in shape to a cylinder. The water seems to be spinning into a kind of “roll”. This comparison will help novice artists understand the concept faster. Therefore, for clarity, I give an example with a sheet of paper. The water forms waves as it approaches the shore. The closer to the coast, the wave crests become higher and begin to twist, forming a cylindrical shape. Next, the wave hits the shore and its crest breaks. This creates sea foam, which goes into the sea when the water recedes. The foam is torn to shreds, forming an intricate pattern of peculiar “veins”.

7. In our landscape, the inside of the wave crest is darker than the rest of the water. However, in the very middle of the wave we convey the transparency of the water with a lighter tone. The closer to the shore, the shallower the water. Therefore, you can see through the water sea bottom and its color will be warmer than the color of the rest of the sea, and the tone will be slightly lighter.

8. The wave in our landscape is breaking on the shore, so now we begin to paint a lot of spray and sea foam on the crest of the wave. Overall, its color is light, but not white. Also, this mass of splashes has volume. Therefore, at the bottom and along the edges of the sea foam, I paint shadow areas that will give it volume.

9. We continue to work, honing the details.

10. We introduce the silhouette of a large stone on the seashore. I do this with a palette knife. Brown- Blue colour The stone is mixed with the previous layer of paint, so we gain the full strength of the color gradually.

11. Condensing the color. Making the silhouette of the stone darker.

12. We register the light. We introduce a warm “red” color, which makes the top and left side of the stone lighter. We do all this with a palette knife to give the stone a faceted and “splintered” shape.

13. We increase the size of the stone block, moving its silhouette beyond the crest of the wave. We paint the shadow part of the stone with a darker and cooler color.

14. Next, we work on reflecting the stone in the input. Appears on the blue surface of the sea Brown color reflections, broken across by small waves. In a similar way enter light color reflections from the sea foam of a wave crest. The reflection is light, blurry on the surface of the water. That is, it will not have clear boundaries.

15. Working on the nuances. I introduce a rich blue color into the background of the sea.

16. I enter the details. For example, foam on the crest along the entire length of the sea wave.

17. At the final stage, I correct what I wrote earlier in accordance with what happened at the end. For example, I removed excess clouds and muted the whiteness of the waves in the background. I did this in order to highlight the main thing - the wave in the foreground. Everything else - the sky, clouds, waves in the distance - should complement the compositional center, and not distract from it. After the painting is basically painted, you can clarify something in details and nuances. I bring the painting to its finished form.

18. As a result, the seascape should be dynamic and alive. The wind should be felt, the wave should rush towards the shore, twisting and breaking against a rock block. Spray and sea breeze should fly away in the wind. Achieving these goals will create the appropriate mood in seascape and will make the painting expressive.

P.S. In this master class, the work required was oil paints, primed cardboard measuring 19x12 cm, a round bristle brush No. 3, a round synthetic hair brush No. 1, and a palette knife.
