How to get to the monument to M.A. Sholokhov: Art. metro station Kropotkinskaya

The monument to the writer Mikhail Alexandrovich Sholokhov on Gogolevsky Boulevard was unveiled on May 24, 2007. This is the second monument to Sholokhov in the capital, the first erected without the approval of the Moscow commission on monumental art, is located at the intersection of Volgogradsky Prospekt and Volzhsky Boulevard.

The idea of creating a monument appeared twenty years ago. Then the competition was won by Iulian Rukavishnikov, who assumed that the monument would be located on Zubovskaya Square. For unknown reasons, the project was never implemented at that time, but in the 2000s they remembered it. This time, the son of Iulian Rukavishnikov, Alexander, took part in the competition, modified his father’s project, and won another competition. Relatives of Mikhail Sholokhov also took part in the creation of the monument, who provided the sculptor with photographs and the necessary information.

As already mentioned, the first monument was “illegal,” so the commission on monumental art had difficulty accepting its existence. The idea of erecting a second monument to Sholokhov against the backdrop of this situation did not evoke understanding or approval. Various reasons were given, including the fact that the composition could block Gogolevsky Boulevard, and the fact that it is illogical to erect a monument to Sholokhov near the house in which Turgenev lived. In fact, the place for the monument was not chosen by chance - the figure of Sholokhov faces Sivtsev Vrazhek, where Sholokhov lived in Moscow.

The sculptural composition represents a bronze figure of Sholokhov sitting in a Don boat. The pedestal does not depict a shoal at all, but a river surface - that’s why it was covered with bronze. The writer is dressed in a padded jacket, his gaze is directed into the distance. Behind the boat on both sides are horses swimming in the opposite direction. The two groups of horses seem to diverge like a wedge, which symbolizes the split of the country into “red” and “white” during the Civil War. The slab with horses represents a fountain. The entire composition as a whole is tilted towards the pedestrian zone.

Since the fountain was planned to be designed in such a way that water would flow into it all the time, only heads were created for the image of swimming horses. In fact, the water in the fountain is often turned off, and the monument looks more than strange at this time. The heads of horses embedded in the slabs encourage people to come up with new names for the monument. Such as "pet sematary" or "meat processing plant". In winter, jokers sometimes make hares out of snow and put them in a boat with Sholokhov, turning him into Grandfather Mazai.

Description

Monument to the famous and popular writer, the creator of the work Quiet Don, Nobel laureate Mikhail Aleksandrovich Sholokhov, presents a large bronze sculptural composition on Gogolevsky Boulevard.

A bronze boat is installed on a stone pedestal covered with bronze. Mikhail Sholokhov is sitting in a boat wearing a quilted jacket. There is a memorial inscription on the pedestal: “To Mikhail Sholokhov.” The pedestal is part of the composition and represents the river along which Mikhail Alexandrovich is sailing in a boat.

Horses are swimming in the river behind Sholokhov. They, having split into two groups, blur into different sides, symbolize division Russian people on red and white during civil war at the beginning of the twentieth century.

The sculptural composition includes a fountain imitating the flow of a river and horses overcoming the current. The composition is continued by the paved part of Gogolevsky Boulevard, crossing it, it represents the Don River, along which Mikhail Sholokhov is sailing. The sculptural composition of the monument ends with a bronze bench.

History of creation

The history of the creation of the monument to Mikhail Sholokhov begins in the 80s, when a competition was announced for the design of a monument to the great writer Mikhail Sholokhov. The project of sculptor Iulian Rukavishnikov won the competition and, as planned, they wanted to install it on Zubovskaya Square, but the project was suspended. And only twenty years later, Julian’s son, Alexander Rukavishnikov, returned to his father’s project, finalized it, and in 2007 a monument to Mikhail Sholokhov was erected on Gogolevsky Boulevard.

How to get there

Get to the Kropotkinskaya metro station and get off at the beginning of Gogolevsky Boulevard. Along the boulevard, go towards the center to house 10, where the Museum branch is located contemporary art. This is where it is located impressive monument Mikhail Sholokhov.

A man in a padded jacket floating in a boat with the current and horses broken into two schools appeared on Gogolevsky Boulevard in 2007 - this is a monument to Sholokhov, which was officially created by Alexander Rukavishnikov, but he only realized the idea of the 1980s, which belonged to his own father.

Iulian Rukavishnikov was also a sculptor, and quite famous and liked by the second Moscow mayor. The sculptor died in 2000, and Luzhkov entrusted the controversial project to his son. The ambiguity of the idea was that one monument in Moscow had already immortalized the memory of the writer. In addition, right behind Sholokhov is visible former house Maslova, where Turgenev often visited.

Monument to Sholokhov and its neighborhood

But since nothing prevented the creation of Luzhkov’s second favorite, Zurab Tsereteli, from being placed there, then the boulevard was forced to accept the monument to Sholokhov. Moreover, the composition had a very original layout and clear historical overtones. The monument to Sholokhov is reminiscent of the originality of its construction, which we have already described.

According to the project, the monument to Sholokhov was supposed to be complemented by a fountain, the horses seemed to actually overcome the water flow. Interruptions in the water supply significantly worsened perceptions, leading to the emergence of offensive nicknames. For the younger Rukavishnikov, this was not a surprise; he steadfastly survived the nickname of this sculptural work.

With its composition, the monument to Sholokhov shows both the writer’s connection with the Don and the split of the country into whites and reds in the form of a divided herd. The horse heads are made very realistically, down to the smallest detail of the appearance and details of the harness. They are not at a watering hole or grazing, they are in a frantic search for the true path.

The monument to the Nobel Prize winner in literature turned out to be successful, as if it united and accumulated the talents of father and son Rukavishnikov. I remember the works of the elder - a powerful bust of Kurchatov in Moscow and a statue of the Tree of Life in front of the Soviet representative office at the UN in New York (not to be confused with the work of the great Ernst Neizvestny). My son also has a lot decent jobs, from the monument to Mikeshin, who created, to the tombstones of Vysotsky and thief in law Ivankov (Yaponchik).

Gogolevsky Boulevard, formerly Prechistensky, runs in a wide strip from Prechistensky to the Arbat Gates of the capital. There are many attractions nearby that were previously described in our articles or are planned to be described. This is both and worldwide famous museum fine arts named after Pushkin.

Admirers of M.A. Sholokhov’s talent erect monuments associated with the name of the writer in different parts of our country and abroad. This is a tribute amazing person, who considered it an honor to “serve the working people with his pen.”

Photo and description

In Moscow you can see two monuments to Mikhail Sholokhov, the author of “ Quiet Don" And Nobel laureate. The first monument was erected in the early 2000s on Volzhsky Boulevard, created by sculptor Vladimir Glebov and architect Yuri Dremin. This Sholokhov sits on a boulder, and next to him, as a continuation sculptural composition- figures of Cossacks standing on patrol; the hero of “Quiet Don” Grigory Melekhov is recognized in the image of one of them.

The second monument to Mikhail Sholokhov was erected in 2007 on Gogolevsky Boulevard, and this fact caused bewilderment and even rejection on the part of the city authorities - they say that a second monument to this writer from the times of socialist realism is not so necessary for Moscow. But perhaps the installation of this composition became very important for the sculptor Alexander Rukavishnikov. By creating the monument, he completed the work of his father, sculptor Iulian Rukavishnikov, who in the 80s won a competition, developed a design for the monument, but was unable to realize it in stone and bronze. His son won the competition again, and the architect Igor Voskresensky helped him in his work.

The work of father and son Rukavishnikov is a complex sculptural group - complex both compositionally and in meaning. In this composition, the bronze writer sits in a boat, which is located on an inclined pedestal reminiscent of a river wave. Behind the writer’s back, horses are swimming from the boat as if in water; only their heads are visible on the stone surface. The horses separated by the boat symbolize the people of Russia forced to become "white" or "red" after the civil war and revolution. The monument is also a fountain, and when water is supplied, the horses seem to float along a real river.

Despite the writer’s merits and such a complex plan, they repeatedly wanted to move the monument, and there was often no water in the fountain.
