Grigoriev said that his "quest in the field of genre painting remained empirical for a long time", that at first he "wrote everything from life and pulled a lot of unnecessary things into the picture", but then he "moved on to the director's decision." The painting "Goalkeeper" was created in 1949. At this time, Grigoriev was already a professor, head of the department of drawing.
