About 40 exhibition halls of Moscow museums are open for free, you just need to come. However, not all museums operate for free. Only museums under the Department of Culture are available for free admission. Federal museums, such as the Tretyakov Gallery and the Kremlin are operating as usual.

To visit many of the museums on this list, you still need to show up at the box office and receive a so-called free ticket, then go through security control with it at the entrance.

For the twelfth time in the capital of Russia there will be a festival, which is celebrated all over the world - “Night of Museums”. On the night from Saturday to Sunday (from May 19 to 20, 2018), all Moscow museums will receive visitors at special times.

People will have the opportunity not only to look at interesting exhibits, but also to listen special program, which each museum participating in the action prepares specifically for this festival. In 2018, more than two hundred Moscow museums and various exhibition centers took part in the event.

1978 is the year of birth International Day museums. Exactly forty years ago, on May 18, 1970, the first celebration and solemn festivities were held on the occasion of this day. Today, more than two hundred countries celebrate International Museum Day, and the Russian Federation is one of them.

From the beginning of the celebration until 1991, this holiday did not generate demand among the population. This day was considered solemn only by those who had anything to do with the museum, often these were employees. Over time, interest in the holiday has grown among historians, art critics, and archaeologists, who also have an indirect connection to the existence of museums.

A year later, it was decided to set a special theme for this day every year and come up with a motto to go with it. This strategy was correct, since a lot of people were immediately interested in Museum Day and wanted to participate and join the celebration. As a result of this, the celebrations were held on a larger scale, which is why patrons, sponsors and authorities had to invest much more money into the event.

And in 1997, in Germany, before International Museum Day, the authorities came up with the idea of making an opening in museums where festivities were held and it was possible to visit a cultural building at a time that was considered non-working on ordinary days. Two years later, a similar tradition was picked up by Germany’s neighbor, France. And in 2001, thirty-nine more countries around the world adopted this new approach to the celebration.

In 2008, ninety countries from all over the world celebrated International Museum Day. And the number of museums that debuted in the event exceeded 20 thousand. In 2015, this World Holiday was celebrated by more than 150 countries around the world.

To date, more than two hundred countries around the world will take part in the event to celebrate Museum Day. IN Russian Federation it will be held under the motto “Masterpieces from the Vaults”.
