Clothes for the theater in spring for women. Theater dress code: a relic of the past or a reality of life? What to wear to the theater

  • 14.04.2019

When visiting the capital of Austria, I was greatly impressed by the Vienna Opera, and especially by the guide’s story that it has a strict dress code. According to it, women should come to premieres in evening dresses, and men in tails, while for other productions cocktail dresses and formal suits are acceptable. And even if in Belarus you will be allowed into a performance when you buy tickets even in shorts, the concept of bad manners has not been canceled.

Theater begins with a hanger, and this rule applies not only to actors. A well-chosen outfit will not make you a target for astonished glances and will help you feel confident and natural. Of course, you should choose an outfit depending on the theater you are going to, because what is appropriate for going to the ballet will look ridiculous at a children's production.

Opera and Ballet Theater, Drama Theater

Unfortunately today Evening Dress, with the exception of closed screenings, even in opera house will make you a black sheep. The best option for visiting such an establishment would be a knee-length cocktail dress or slightly higher. Small black dress out of competition.

Ruffles, sequins, guipure and rhinestones should be left in the closet for another occasion. In the selection of this outfit, nobility comes first, so the clothes should be elegant and discreet, and the makeup should be evening, but not provocative. Replacement shoes are a must in winter! Pumps to match the dress are ideal.

The dress should be non-flashy, preferably dark shades; a shallow neckline is acceptable. Ideal accessories include a clutch, Jewelry, jewelry made of pearls and stones, as well as high-quality expensive jewelry.

But you should forget about hats and high hairstyles, because they can interfere with the people who are sitting in the row behind you. And etiquette insists that a real lady I should go to the theater in stockings that match my dress, but this is a matter of taste.

Unlike the opera drama theater In addition to cocktail dresses, formal suits and separately selected sets of tops and skirts will look appropriate. Let men wear trousers, but a woman, at least in the theater, should be feminine and irresistible. Silk scarves and small brooches will go well with suits.

Youth, children's, musical, puppet, satire theater

The relaxed atmosphere that prevails during productions in these theaters requires a less formal and solemn appearance.

Since children's performances are often held during the day, you can take your child to them in a dress with a flower or large polka dots, which is absolutely inappropriate for evening outings. In this case, makeup will also be significantly different from evening makeup and will match the chosen outfit.

Lovers of extravagant outfits and bright accents without changing own style, can attend musicals, comedy shows and youth productions. This is where you can really demonstrate your own individuality and sense of style, and, believe me, there will be someone to appreciate you!

Experimental, new theater

You can, however, wear jeans to the theater only if you have bought a ticket to a scandalous and eccentric production by a modern director. At such performances, spectators can sit on the floor, become a target for shooting from water pistols, learn yoga poses, dance, sing and even act as actors... All this requires maximum freedom and convenience, so casual and comfortable clothes will be just in place here .

If you are going to the theater or opera, you should find out in advance how to dress and follow the established rules. In big cities, ladies often wear modest evening dresses in black, blue or red to the theater. However, this does not mean that you have to wear a dress of these exact colors. You can experiment with other colors. Men usually come to the theater in a dark suit.

However, the color of the suit depends on the established rules of a particular society. Casual wear clothing such as jeans, shorts and shirts of frivolous colors should be avoided. However, in small towns there may be exceptions.

  • If it is customary to dress strictly formally at the theater, never come there in casual clothes.
  • If your lady is going to wear a black dress, you should not choose a black suit for yourself, otherwise your couple will look boring and uninteresting. Your clothes should be slightly different in color from your partner's.

Clothes, shoes and accessories for going to the theater

Color scheme and rules for selecting theatrical dresses

It is customary to wear a dress to the theater. Jeans, short skirts or formal suits are not suitable for such an evening - they will be completely out of place. The length of the dress can vary from foot to mid-knee. You can wear a dress above the knee, but no more than 5 cm. Shorter dresses in the theater look cheap and vulgar, and the theater is not a place for debauchery. The color scheme is determined by your choice. It could be a black dress, blue or even red. The dress can be decorated with a neckline or neckline. It is important that you should not combine a slit and a neckline for such entertainment as the theater. If the dress has a cutout, then watch its length; you should not expose your hips. Choose dresses with a neckline carefully. The neckline should not expose your chest completely, just slightly. Dresses with a cutout at the back look spectacular on women in evening wear. This kind of neckline should not expose the entire back - only the upper part, up to the bra.

Stockings, shoes and handbag

Depending on the color of the dress, choose nylon stockings. Yes, yes, exactly stockings. Stockings will not stand out from the back of your dress like tights. Avoid fishnet stockings. Be sure to wear heels under the dress. Select the heel height based on your experience: be it a low wide heel or a thin stiletto heel. These can be either shoes or boots (depending on the season). Choose the right handbag to match your outfit. Don't take large, fashionable tote bags to the theater. You won't need that much bag size in the theater. It will be enough to take a small clutch, which is worn either under the armpit or in the hands. The bag should match the color of the shoes.

Bijouterie

To give the dress a finished look, add a set of jewelry. These can be beads or chains with pendants, depending on the model of the dress. A bracelet on your hand looks gorgeous if the sleeve of the dress is 190. Earrings will complete the look.

Smoothly moving away from the outfit, we approached no less important stage- evening makeup. Remember, you are not going to a movie or a disco, but to a theater, so you will have to give up your favorite sparkles and red eyelashes.

Evening makeup in this case should be restrained, but by no means minimal. Apply the same tone to the face and neck area using foundation and powder. Use blush to highlight your cheekbones a little and rub gently. Line your eyes with a pencil. Depending on your eye color, apply eye shadow. Brown and beige shadows suit any eye color, so you can use standard colors. Apply a lighter shade to the inner corners of the eyes, and apply a dark shade of the same color to the edge of the eyelid. Blend with a brush and you will get a smooth flow of color. The lower eyelid can be left unchanged or highlighted with shadows that were applied to the edge of the upper eyelid. Gently apply mascara to the eyelashes of the upper and lower eyelids. Such eyes will not go unnoticed.

Choose a lipstick 2 shades darker than your natural lip color. Be sure to use a lip pencil. In this case, the lipstick will stay on your lips longer, and they will have beautiful straight lines. Evening makeup can be diversified with shining pearlescent powder. Apply it to the neck and arms, but most importantly, do not overdo it.

Complete the look with a theatrical hairstyle

After makeup, tidy up your hair. They must be washed in advance. Combed and too voluminous hairstyles are not suitable for going to the theater. Favorite ponytails and braids are also prohibited. Long and medium hair can be pulled back into a sleek bun and pinned with pins. You can also let your hair down. Make them perfectly smooth or wavy. Hair raised up looks beautiful. This hairstyle can be made more attractive by just letting down a few strands. If your dress has a beautiful neckline, then this hairstyle will suit you. Girls with short hair should not smooth their hair. Shining bobby pins will look spectacular in your hair. Hairpins in the form of butterflies or bows will spoil your appearance.

Don't forget to pay attention to your nails. They must have a well-groomed appearance and be varnished. A win-win manicure is “French”.

Your image is now complete. Feel free to wear a dress, shoes, and don’t forget about your handbag. Look in the mirror - the reflection in it will make you smile and admire yourself.

A girl going to the theater should feel like a celebrity walking down the red carpet.

The article will tell you about the rules of etiquette in the theater, what is a sign of good taste and what will cause condemnation from cultural society, and will also help you choose the right outfit for going to the theater, including for a child.

If going to the cinema has long ceased to be a special event, and the rules of behavior in cinemas have undergone significant changes due to the force of time, in particular with regard to eating while watching, then the theater is trying to maintain its position.

Strict adherence to traditions social life and no one requires rules of etiquette, and most likely you will not be kicked out if you come to the theater in jeans. However, if you consider yourself to be a cultured person and respect the centuries-old rituals of behavior in society, before visiting the theater, especially if you don’t go there often, you should learn or refresh your memory of a few simple rules.

Rules for going to the theater

1. You should arrive to the theater in advance (at least 20-30 minutes)
Time is needed to get yourself in order, return clothes, change shoes if necessary, visit the ladies' room, look around the foyer with an exhibition of theater works, etc., purchase a program and/or binoculars, go to the buffet if desired, find your seats in the hall or on balcony It will be more pleasant for both you and those around you if you perform all these actions without haste

2. Your wardrobe shouldn't be random.
The outfit requirements will be described in more detail below. One has only to make a reservation that even if you are in a hurry to go to a performance after work, this is not a reason to appear at the theater in an unkempt manner and in inappropriate attire

3. Perfume should not be strong and intrusive
Being in public place In an enclosed space, you should always remember that the aroma emanating from you can cause inconvenience to others, in particular, it can cause headaches, or excessive fumes can cause a neighbor to sneeze. Do not use strong odors when visiting the theater and remember to use moderation

4. Don't make it difficult for people sitting behind you to watch the theater.
We are talking about a fluffy hairstyle, large accessories on the head (flowers, hats, feathers, etc.). An excessively high hairstyle will not cause approval, will cause inconvenience to others and will be considered a violation of the rules of etiquette

5. Shoes must be clean
This is a universal rule of good manners for any occasion. Take care of this in advance by bringing along an appropriate shoe sponge or a replacement pair of shoes

6. Keep your breath fresh
If you are a spectator surrounded by a large crowd of people, do not overuse food with a persistent unpleasant odor on the day of the performance or use chewing gum, but only before entering the auditorium. After this, not to mention presentation time, any chewing will make you look very bad.

How to behave in the theater?

Now let's dwell on the standards of behavior directly in the theater institution itself.

Before the beginning

  • At the entrance, the man shows his ticket, then lets his companion go forward. If the company is large, the actions are similar: one of the male representatives shows the tickets to the theater worker, and then lets the whole company pass in front of him
  • A gentleman helps a lady take off outerwear, after that he undresses himself.
  • A man must invite his companion to visit the buffet; she has the right to refuse or agree
  • Whether or not to buy a performance program is an individual decision. However, if you prefer not to spend money, you should not then ask for the program from other viewers or inadvertently look into your neighbor’s program

  • The man enters the auditorium first; if the tickets are checked at this stage, the gentleman presents the ticket and then lets the lady through, who follows the ticket taker to her seat. If a theater worker does not escort the audience, the man should walk slightly ahead to show the seat to his companion
  • According to the rules of etiquette, a woman should sit to the right of a man. However, there may be exceptions if the seat is located near the aisle or for some reason is not very convenient for a woman

IMPORTANT: When making your way down a row to your seat, it is customary to do so facing the audience in that row. This rule is typical for the European public. In the USA, on the contrary, you should turn around and face the stage.

  • If you are visiting the theater with friends, the seating principle is as follows: do not leave women next to strangers, i.e. You should sit down in a chain - a man, ladies (if available, alternating with men) and a man bringing up the rear.

Late

  • If you arrived at the theater after the third bell, and your seats are in a box, you can go into it while the lights go out. As for the stalls and other parts of the auditorium, searching for seats after last call not valid
  • According to etiquette, in this case you should wait until the end of the first act or overture, if it is, for example, an opera
  • If you are allowed into the hall, the theater staff will most likely offer you free outer seats in the stalls or on the balcony. If they are absent, you can wait for intermission, standing in the hall at the entrance

Presentation time

  • A rule that will be reminded more than once in the theater itself: do not use and turn off phones, do not film the performance with a camera or video camera.

  • Talk, exchange opinions, whisper, giggle, rustle, chew, etc. - all this will have to be left for the intermission, so as not to infringe on the rights of other spectators and not to disturb the cast
  • Applause must be heard after the end of the performance and, if appropriate, after the logical end of the scene. If in doubt, focus on those around you; your single claps can throw off the actors
  • Don't sit back in your chair while watching. Occupying both armrests, throwing your legs up, leaning on the front back, etc. are inappropriate cases of familiar behavior that cause inconvenience to other spectators

Intermission

  • During a break between actions, the gentleman should offer the lady a trip to the buffet; if she refuses, then she should not be left alone in the auditorium. With the exception of short absences as necessary
  • Looking at spectators through binoculars is considered indecent. Binoculars should only be used to view the action on stage

  • If you met your friend at the theater and briefly exchanged greetings, it is not necessary to introduce the person to your companion/companion. If the conversation has gone beyond the usual greeting, introducing them would be a sign of good manners
  • You should not wave your arms across the hall as a sign of greeting to an acquaintance; a slight bow of the head would be appropriate. Shaking hands across seated people is also unacceptable. It’s better to say hello and chat during intermission in the lobby or buffet
  • Discussing the behavior or appearance of other spectators, even if inappropriate, is indecent. If this causes you inconvenience, you should contact the theater staff, whose functions include monitoring order and eliminating such problems.

End of the performance

  • After the end of the performance, you should give a standing ovation

  • If you bought flowers in advance as a token of gratitude, you should give them after the performance is over. When presenting flowers, you should not ask for an autograph from the actors, take pictures, kiss them, etc.
  • It is considered extremely indecent to leave the auditorium during the bows of the artists and before the end of the performance.
  • Screams for an encore are not appropriate in dramatic theater. You can ask to perform an encore excerpt in ballet, musicals, musical performances etc.

Is there a dress code at the theater? Dress code for the theater

If we talk about official dress codes, the requirements for which are stated in the rules of each theater and can be seen, for example, on the corresponding website or stands of the theater institution, then they are strict mainly in relation to:

  • beach and sportswear and shoes (shorts, flip-flops, sneakers, sweatshirts

Otherwise, the rules are advisory in nature. However, there is an unwritten dress code, the requirements for which have evolved over many decades. And, despite the fact that no one strictly monitors them, it is a sign of good form to follow certain rules when choosing a wardrobe for an upcoming theatrical event.

Main criteria:

  • lack of flashy colors
  • brevity and restraint
  • difference from everyday life
  • availability of accessories
  • A little bag
  • a reasonable approach to exposing certain areas of the body
  • avoidance of excessive ruffles, lace, and fishnet tights

What should a girl wear to the theater? Photo

A universal option is a cocktail dress that meets the following criteria:

  • length to the middle of the tempered cup

  • discreet color (black, dark shades of blue, green, gray, purple)

  • “calm” not too shiny material

  • not too deep neckline

IMPORTANT: Going to the theater is an inappropriate occasion for a mini dress.

A more office-friendly alternative for those who visit the theater after work and do not have the opportunity to change clothes would be a blouse and skirt. The classic option is a white blouse and pencil skirt.

However, the options can be more unique. The main thing is to stick to the length of the skirt and choose a blouse that is not too transparent, preferably with covered shoulders, and also beware of provocative colors.

As for trouser suits, if possible, preference should still be given to skirts, but this option is also acceptable. A strict dark suit with a contrasting light blouse will not stand out from the bulk.

In principle, any outfit, even everyday ones, can be adapted if necessary for going to the theater. The main thing is to add the right accessories:

  • silk scarf, elegant belt, large earrings or other jewelry

IMPORTANT: Women should have a small handbag for such cases, since a bulky handbag will have to be held on their laps, which is inconvenient and not entirely aesthetically pleasing.

Shoes are an important part of a girl's wardrobe. In the theater you should wear shoes or boots that are medium or high heels. If you travel by car and/or boots look inappropriate with a dress, consider the option of changing shoes.

Evening dress for the theater, photo

Regarding more elegant dresses that can be worn by female audiences in the theater, the following should be considered:

  • scale of establishment or event
  • day of the week and time of presentation
  • where are the seats in the auditorium (their price category)

For example, if you are attending a high-profile premiere, you have a VIP invitation to the front row at a major theater, or you are visiting La Scala, Vienna Opera etc., you can afford, and the format of the event will even require it, a floor-length evening dress.

If you are going to a regular performance in a small town after work, such a dress will at least cause confusion.

In any case, dresses may be different.

This dress can easily be “walked” in Bolshoi Theater at the weekend premiere.

But this is only suitable for exceptional occasions with a red carpet and special dress code requirements, which will be communicated to you in advance.

What should a man wear to the theater? Photo

Despite the fact that women often have problems choosing outfits, there are also some tips for men in terms of appearance in the theater.

  • Ideal if it is a suit with a white shirt and tie

  • It is advisable to choose a suit that is plain or has a barely noticeable checkered/stripe design.
  • The shirt should be light

  • Instead of a tie, options with a scarf or bow tie are possible, as you prefer

  • If a man does not want to part with his favorite jeans, let them not be torn or different shades, and it is advisable to compensate for this look with a plain shirt and, as an option, a less formal jacket

Tuxedo for the theater, photo

A formal tuxedo would be appropriate, as in the case of a women's evening dress, in major theater at the premiere.

It is important that your companion is dressed in the same style. If a man chooses a tuxedo, it means that a lady cannot afford anything more modest than a long evening dress.

What should men and women wear to the theater in winter?

Features of choosing outfits in winter include:

  • closed shoulders

  • long sleeve

  • indoor shoes

If you have an open dress, you can throw on a scarf or wear a jacket.

Sweatshirts and sweaters, both for women and men, are too casual options for the theater and should be avoided.

Men prefer to wear a jacket, which does not have to be part of a suit. More modern version, when the jacket is slightly different in style, it may also be appropriate for attending an ordinary everyday performance.

Children's clothing for the theater

Of course, no matter what the child is, it is unlikely that anyone will be reprehensible about it. Therefore, the children's dress code should not be perceived as an invented requirement, but as part of moral education child for the future. Children who are early years They will be taught how to behave and how to look in the theater; most likely, they will adopt this behavior in adulthood.

  • Study the dress code requirements set by the theater administration
  • Consider the time of the performance (daytime/evening), the audience, the “stardom” of the theatrical performance
  • When choosing an outfit, think about how it will match with your companion's attire.

  • If you doubt the degree of “dressing up” and are afraid of looking like a “black sheep”, stick to the golden mean: you should look more festive than at work, but more modest than if you were going to a theater award.
  • A win-win option for a woman is a dark sheath dress, for a man - a suit with a shirt and tie
  • Consider accessories and matching shoes

Remember that going to the theater is a social event, an opportunity not only to join cultural life, but also to show yourself, so you shouldn’t miss the chance to wear a dress that’s lonely and bored in the closet after High school prom or a friend's wedding. And you will always have time to put on jeans.

Video: Clothing for the theater

Not a single outing for the fairer sex is complete without spending minutes, or even hours, near the closet and mirror. A woman wants to look as impressive as possible. Going to the theater is no exception - you want to look both bright and elegant. And the most important thing is not to overdo it when choosing your outfit, hairstyle and even makeup.

How should a woman dress correctly for the theater?

  • The basis
We do not merge with the gray mass. Are looking for individual style. There should be something attractive, sexy and exciting in your image.

Just neatly and without any hint of vulgarity (if you are going to wear a dress with an open back, then no deep neckline).
  • Choosing a dress
It is customary to wear a dress to the theater, so you will have to give up your usual jeans and trousers for a while. You are going to the theater - not for a walk or to a cafe, so we also leave all the short dresses until the right moment. The ideal length of the dress is from the middle of the kneecap down to the foot (we choose the final length ourselves).

If you decide to wear a dress with a cut-out, then make sure that your thigh is securely hidden by the fabric (such “temptations” are useless in the theater). The neckline should also not be too deep.
  • Color range and material
Undoubtedly, you should choose a dress in which you will be pleased to shine with your beauty. Therefore, you should choose a material and color that you like (and that suits you).

For example, a classic black satin dress or a bright red velvet dress.
  • Selection of stockings
You should not wear tights under an evening dress - they will simply be uncomfortable. Stockings will be much more advantageous (from all sides) - they are more comfortable, more inconspicuous and will last longer (if you choose them correctly).

Choose tight stockings, so that at the most inopportune moment the treacherous arrow does not run. Also, you should not buy fishnet stockings - they look vulgar and cheap.
  • Shoe selection
Depending on the season, choose what to wear on your feet - shoes or boots. In any case, shoes should have heels. The height of the heel depends only on your ability to walk in such shoes - for example, elegant ankle boots with stiletto heels or shoes with rough heels.

The most important thing is that these shoes match your dress and handbag.
  • Choosing a handbag
Everyone will agree that you should take a small handbag to the theater. Large bags look very bulky, awkward, and they are simply not needed in the theater. In the theater, a clutch is enough, which can be on a strap or a neat thin chain.

This handbag will fit everything you need - a phone, car keys, cash and a minimum set of cosmetics to touch up your makeup. The color of the handbag should match the color of the dress, but you can play with contrast - for example, a bright red clutch and a black dress.
  • Jewelry selection
Jewelry is always used to complete the look (“cut”). Don't be afraid of pendants, beads or even regular chains, because they can change your entire look in an instant. Most often, diamond jewelry is worn to the theater, although high-quality costume jewelry is also suitable.

Don't forget about bracelets that highlight your thin wrists. It is important to choose the right earrings. Earrings should not be massive (so that your ears do not get tired during the performance) and too bright (so as not to overshadow your hairstyle).
  • Makeup choice
The most important part after choosing a dress is makeup. Your “Make-Up” should not be too bright, so immediately put everything shiny and shimmering aside. The main rule of “theatrical” makeup is restraint, so you should use a minimum of cosmetics. Even out your complexion using foundation, concealer or powder.

Then apply bronzer and blush to your cheekbones. When choosing shadows, you need to make sure that they match your hair. The best option, which suits absolutely all girls - beige shadows. Complete all this with neat arrows, paint over your eyelashes with mascara, and your eye makeup will be complete. It is better to use lipstick several shades darker - this will help highlight your lips.
  • Hairstyle
Wash your hair the day before so that on the day of visiting the theater you don’t run around the house, frantically trying to dry and comb unruly curls. If you have long hair, put them up elegantly in a bun, as ponytails or braids are not suitable for this occasion. Those with curly hair are allowed to attend the theater with their hair down.

You can also style it, then you won’t have to remove your hair either. If you have short hair, be sure to give them volume and splendor. For any hairstyle, do not use bright hairpins or elastic bands - they will not add elegance to you.
